" Everyone needs Faith, Family, Friends, and a Good Education "
Charles Cawthon Ed.D.
Welcome To My Campaign For Okaloosa School Board
I was born in Okaloosa County on October 16, 1956. I was blessed to have been raised in a Christian home by my parents Ray and Audrey Cawthon. I have been married for 30 years to Rhonda Cawthon. My wife and I are members of the First Baptist Church of Holt. We have two adult sons, Andrew and Matthew. Matthew is married to Kappi Cawthon and they are the parents of our two grandchildren, Mattox and Saylor.
I attended grades 1-12 in the Okaloosa School District. After college I began teaching in Okaloosa County. I retired from the Okaloosa School District on May 31, 2015, after serving 37 years. I established an extensive background in education serving as a teacher, K-12 school based administration, and in district level administrative capacities. While serving as a professional educator, I earned additional professional educational degrees including the Doctorate of Education at the University of West Florida. I have published books that are now being internationally cited in other research and studies on school safety. I am very proud of our school resource officer (SRO) program and their record of maintaining safety in our schools. I have worked with the Okaloosa SRO program since the inception of the program in 1995. We have always had an outstanding SRO program and one of the highlights of my career was seeing our school district SRO program receive the " 2015 National Model SRO Program Award ".
During my service in the Okaloosa School District I have had the pleasure of meeting many new residents and natives of Okaloosa County. I have been very blessed to have lived and served among so many friendly residents here in our county. I am proud to have served in the Okaloosa School District. Our schools consistently perform at the top level in Florida.
It is not my nature to draw attention to myself or publicize contributions that I have made to help people or organizations. I was taught in church and by my parents to serve and donate generously without drawing attention to myself. However, as a candidate for public office I do realize it is necessary to provide statements about my community involvement and services. Throughout my career as an educator I often made contributions, together with other school district employees, to help students and members of the community in times of need. This includes decades of contributions and service involving time and money contributed to agencies such as the United Way, American Cancer Society, Shriner's Hospitals for Children, Emerald Coast Rescue Missions, and Bay Area Food Banks. I am a member of PAWS and the NRA. There are many other community activities that I have spent countless volunteer hours helping children, many of which come from single parent families. I would prefer that people talk to my former students and colleagues in the Okaloosa School District, and youth activity directors in my local area to confirm the decades I spent as a volunteer serving our community. I have devoted a huge amount of my life as a volunteer coaching multiple teams in schools and city recreation programs. Over the last thirty years I coached over fifty teams in all sports. There were many years when I coached all seasonal sports including soccer, baseball, basketball, and football all in the same year. I do not regret one minute of time I spent helping kids. I will always remember the experience as time and money well spent.
Kindly and Professionally Yours in Education,
Dr. Charles Cawthon
